  1. Hi guys, Just thought i'd share some of the weird and wonderful things that we'd figured out over my first playthrough of the Agricultural Upgrade. I've signed off on our colony at cycle 700 - however it was fully sustainable and could have essentially run forever. Food was sorted, water was infinite, waste water was controlled and temperatures were being managed. It was a bumpy road to get there, with a few peaks and troughs of potential despair mixed pleasantly with new discoveries. Here are a few of my findings. Naturally planted crops can become excellent crops very easily - just by controlling temperature and air pressure. Lay a load of planter boxes in a workable area, i.e. mealwoods in a 20~ degree polluted area, plant the seeds in the boxes, deconstruct them, and you'll have excellent crops in no time. Same can be achieved with Sleet Wheet in cold biomes. Early food sorted. Heavy watt wire can be bridged through wall tiles, and can be bridged OVER if you lay the bridges first, then lay the heavy watt wire. Not so much as a tip, more of a base-saving sanity maintainer. Wiring is incredibly powerful with the transformer changes, so I would recommend a "cavity wall" approach to your wiring. (keep your heavy watt/transformers in a little "utility" space where you can branch off your circuits) Water cooling/heating in pipes is incredibly powerful for maintaining temperatures in your grow rooms. Run a radiator of non-insulated pipe made of granite, fill that pipe with your cooled/heated water of choice, then either closed loop it, or have it to a controlled "recycle" room to keep the flow going. It enabled us to achieve 100/100 pincha peppers and bristle blossoms. Beautiful Natural gas geysers are insane. Really. I'm informed by some of the legends of the forums that the gas output is currently broken, and has been fixed already in current testing builds, however as it stands now, 1 natural gas geyser can sustain 6-7 natural gas generators. Use it till they fix it. Manual generators should only be used to kick start your main system if/when it ever stops for any reason, and coal gens can be completely bypassed if you so desire (didn't use any in 700 cycles... We were lucky with natural geysers though I guess...) Carbon dioxide/chlorine make the perfect "grow room" gasses - as they're both a plentiful nuisance, but also keep your crops produce from rotting if allowed to manually harvest. Pump it where you need it and sit back and bask in your splendor Lag is still a factor - so have a project in mind and aim for it - don't over extend or unnecessarily expand to areas you don't need. Get the materials you need and build what you want to. My colony essentially became unplayable on stream due to over-exploring the asteroid in the search for wolframite (turns out we had bugger all anyway!), which lead to melting ice biomes, and huge, vast areas of mined out gas-discos. Although the piping/game optimizations have been brilliant, the lag caused by "open space gas meanderings" still very much exists Don't be afraid to mush bar. We ate a lot of dirt, and it did us no harm! Early game just handle your food as best you can until you've got either some natural crops or sleet wheat sorted. Chefs are also important dupes now - we ended with 4 chefs with 25+ cooking skill. Batteries on every circuit. No really. After your transformer - make sure you put batteries on your small wires. A massive battery bank on your heavy watt wire main circuit wont offer much - its the 1kw circuits that need the buffer most. If you want your machines to function without interruption and are maximizing your power draw per circuit, you'll need batteries. Best tip of them all really. And that's all I can think of right now. I'll link to my series wrap up video so you can see some of the points mentioned here in the actual colony. All of this was done live on stream so no cheating, and all disasters were witnessed live Good luck with your colony! -Life
  2. Hello! I'd like to share some things I've learned while playing ONI, if you have any tips that can be useful, feel free to comment them too! How to contain poluted oxygen from the outhouse and compost: By putting the outhouse and compost into a airlock sealed room, the polluted oxygen will not spread throughout the base. be sure to include an algae deoxydizer and an air deodorizer as well to make sure the room doesn't become a pocket of carbon dioxide and polluted oxygen! Managing excess carbon dioxide: I built a small area under my base for carbon dioxide to gather, and by building a whole bunch of algae terrariums I was able to get rid of excess carbon dioxide. Controlling polluted water/vomit from duplicants: On each room of my base I put one tile at the end of each room so that if a duplicant vomits or makes a mess, the polluted water will be contained within the area and it won't overflow into other areas. Keeping unbreathable areas from contaminating your base: creating passageways like this one to unbreathable areas will contain whatever unwanted gasses there are, however, I do think that using mechanized airlocks would be more helpful. That is all I have for now, please share any tips if you have any!
  3. Now this thread is not meant to call anyone out, nor is it about venting your frustrations over mistakes noobs make. These are tips aimed more at showing ways of being considerate than improving your skill at the game. I don't have a lot of time for playing computer games, so when I play DST I tend to hop on a random server and help out all I can before I have to leave (sometimes hosting my own server if I can't find one, which tends to be lonely), and I thought it would be nice to share ways I've found of not being a liability and not getting on peoples bad sides. I'd like to see other peoples tips too, in case there's some I've missed or just haven't thought of. So here's mine :3 Don't ask where the Base is Right After Joining: This one's simple, but it goes a long way in not annoying people. Now I know that when you first enter a server you want to know where you can come to at night to cook and spam the /dance emote, but be patient. If you aren't given directions or offered an escort, explore, gather some things, get your bearings. People will respect you more if you survive a few days before asking where the base is located. Who knows, you may even find it on your own! Don't Pick Everything: When first entering one of the many randomly generated islands, our brains tend to immediately slip into PICK ALL THE THINGS mode, especially those of us who've spent a fair amount of time in the single player game. However, when playing in multipayer, one has to stop and think, "Hey, if I systematically pick every bit of flint, grass, twigs, and food from around the portal in a ten mile radius, then there won't be anything left for new players!" Please, be considerate. How can you expect new players to survive a few days if they can't even scrounge up enough for a torch? Drop some Flint by the Portal: It's a small thing that'll help out people just entering the server. You don't even have to go out of the way to do it; if you happen to be pasing by the portal and have some flint to spare, just drop some by it, or make a pickaxe to leave behind so they can collect their own. Heck, I've heard of people making a chest by the portal containing equipment like torches, rabbit earmuffs, and pickaxes to help new players out. Don't Enter in Winter or Summer: Pay attention to the day and season of the server you're joining. If you want to join in a difficult season for some extra challenge, go ahead. Just don't expect everyone to drop what they're doing to help you out. If you don't want Strangers, set a Password: You'd think this one would be a no brainer, but I've heard a lot of stories of people joining servers just to be kicked the moment they enter. I assume it only happens when someone doesn't know that they can make a password for they're server, but still, it's rude. Drop your Stuff Before you Leave: Before you leave a server, it's nice to drop your items on the ground so others can use them. If you're playing with familiar people on a server you know you'll be on again, you can keep your equipment. In any case it's still rude to leave with gears, a big stack of silk, or any other important items still in your inventory, selfishly taking them out of reach of the unfortunate players left on the server. Keep Busy: Look around the base. Does it still need some drying racks? A crockpot? Some farms? Do the traps need to be emptyed? Are you low on wood? Look around for things that need to be done, and if you're having trouble finding something, it never hurts to ask. No one likes a leach. I hope you enjoyed reading through my wall of text and I didn't waste your time. Feel free to post helpful tips of your own, and you might help a few people become a little more helpful. Maybe. If you want a tldr just read the bold text.

  5. Hello world! JamesBucket here with something quite different. I know DST is basically DS RoG multiplayer, but there are some unique features I found, so I put them together. Hope you find them useful, and CHEERS!
  6. What's the best way to accumulate a food surplus in DST? I've been playing on a server with some friends, and we tried several strategies that rapidly depleted: 6 farms of dragonfruit near a frog field -supposedly after I left the server that day winter hit, and two out of 4 people who originally set up the base barely made it through winter. 2 beeboxes and about 8 berry bushes -beeboxes took too long to set up, due to difficulties getting silk. -berrybushes...aren't that useful, we had more, but they were unfertilized. Koalefant hunting-with someone constantly hunting koalefants, we got a fairly decent rate of meat coming in...that soon stopped because the hunter left. most of the meat was converted to jerky. Any ideas? Tips? Strategies for food rationing?
  7. I've never really spent much time refining my base and prettying it up before, so today I made a server specifically for the purpose of building an awesome base. I picked Wickerbottom so I could get an early start and spent the first few days exploring, eventually settling on a spot between a bunch of frog ponds and a savanna with plenty of rabbits and beefalo. However, now that I've picked the spot I find myself kind of overwhelmed. I was just wondering if anyone had good tips for a cool looking, functional base. Even just posting some screen shots for inspiration would be great. Thanks in advance!

Small mistakes. Author Commentary on the first 4 Days. Video Description on Youtube : Day 1 to 4. Summary : Collecting Resources.Wondering if my world is composed of islands.Finding a huge Mosaic Biome.Mining Rocks in Rockyland and Setting a Base.Exploring the Mosaic Biome and Acquiring the Resources for Rain Hat.Finding a Sinkhole.Crafting my Rain Hat. Notes : I have made a few mistakes during the gathering of resources. I didn't pick enough grass at the game start. How to survive Spring : Hammer any skeleton you find for bone shards. Hammer Pig Houses and Touch Stones for Pig Skin in order to create an Umbrella. Building a large stack of grass and twigs is essential in order to farm spiders with traps. Destroy Spider Hives Tier 3 to get spider eggs. Plant the eggs near your base. A Crockpot with a Birdcage will give you a steady amount of food. You can transform monster meat into eggs. Eggs are used in Bacon and Eggs Recipe. It is recommended to create meaty stew when you have large meat (value of 1). A lantern will make exploration easy. Keep in mind that you will have to use Roasted Berries or Fist Full of Jam unless you have farms while being in caves. It will save encounters with Bunnymen and it can save you time. You can hammer Bunny Hutch to rebuild them in the above world near your base. Pigs and Bunnymen will provide a full protection against hounds. You should try getting gears by fighting ClockWork Monsters. A flingomatic is almost required if you want to survive summer. If you come across a desert, you should build a large stack of cactus flowers, hound's tooth and bone shards. Inventory Management is the most important aspect in Don't Starve. Keep a third of your inventory empty. Leave things on road when you don't need them. Travel with only one hat or with a football helmet only to save space. Use cones to plant trees and burn them once they become evergreens to get charcoal. Never gather too many tools. You can burn turf if you don't want to gather wood. I like to gather rocks personally to set up Fire Pits when I am travelling. I can always re-use them later. Fire Pits will help you to survive long nights when it's raining. Commentaries If there's not enough content to make a good judgement, you can wait a few days until the next video will uploaded to Youtube. I don't have a regular schedule. I believe that using all the Youtube features will make it on par with the other videos. I will not talk. Once I have enough content, you may place a judgement on the Playlist (content, author, execution, processing, editing, relevance, polishing).
