Tallbird Doesn't Lose Aggro

I wandered into a tallbird area and of course they all got angry.  I ran away but one tallbird would NOT stop chasing me.  I didn't have its egg, it just wouldn't let up.  (I thought they would eventually drop off even if you did have their egg)  But nope.  Since it was early days I couldn't stop to eat, gather, I could do nothing but run, I ran all day long but eventually died.
